Interview with David Justice of "Hammer Fakes and IO Breaks"
By: Ryan Saba

Recently, the company "Hammer Fakes and IO Breaks" has become popular amongst the ultimate community for making unique posters with common ultimate phrases equipped with neat artwork as well. I interviewed David Justice, the founder of "Hammer Fakes and IO Breaks" to find out a little more about his company, his product, and his vision for the future.

Alright so let's start off with the basics: who are you, what's your experience with ultimate, and what product are you selling?

I’m David Justice, a student at Central Connecticut State University where I play for the Blue Barracudas. I’ve been playing pickup ultimate for a few years, but haven’t started playing official ultimate until last year. I sell Ultimate posters, created specifically for the players and fans of the sport to show off their love for the game.

The posters are very nicely designed; what is your experience with designing things like this?

I’ve been into graphic design since I was in Middle School, I won a few online contests, I made the design for my high school’s t-shirt for our graduating class, and recently I created the shirt design for the Connecticut Ultimate Club Summer League design.

Where did you come up with the idea for creating the posters?

I came up for the idea when looking for different Ultimate things for my walls at school. I used to hang my disc up, but I don’t have any discs that are nice enough to hang on a wall. They’re all beaten up and dirty, I don’t really want those on my walls.

So I started looking for posters, but I never really saw anything at all except on sites like CafePress or Zazzle and they didn’t even look good. Around the time I was looking, the CT Constitution came to the campus of CCSU to sell tickets and promote. They were giving away free posters of the team as well. Lots of people I know put the posters on their walls to show off their support for the team, I thought it would be cool to have posters just for the sport of Ultimate since it seemed no one did anything like it before.

From there I started work on the first few posters for myself and decided if people think it’s a good idea why not see what I can do with it. I posted the first 3 to Reddit and got mixed reactions, but overall it seemed like a good idea. So I worked whenever I had the chance on posters and researching what I would need to get the idea off the ground until I had what I have now.

How big are the posters and what kind of paper are they printed on?

The posters are all 11”x17” and printed on Glossy 48lb paper. They’re durable, yet lightweight and stick on walls pretty easily with tape, but sticky wall mounts are preferred to put them up.

I have to say the "Layout or GTFO" poster is my favorite: which is your favorite and why?

Well my favorite unique one is the Tournament Checklist because I always leave something at home before the tournament. So I know this poster will actually be extremely useful for me. I think overall though, my favorite print is the Buffalo Hunters poster for the AUDL. I’ve always thought their logo was cool since it was based off the Buffalo, NY flag.

I saw that you just designed some AUDL posters and they looked pretty sick. Can you go into your involvement with them, and if you see yourself working with any other teams/companies in the future?

Currently, I am trying to contact teams in the AUDL about purchasing posters. It is tough because it is the end of their season which means that they don’t really have time to sell them unfortunately. I did some promotional posters for the Buffalo Hunters which they loved, and since then I have talked to the CT Constitution, Detroit Mechanix, and I’m waiting for a response from the RI Rampage. Since I finally finished all of the AUDL posters for the current season, I am most likely going to email teams about using them for next season. They’re all also part of a larger AUDL project that I will be showcasing in a week or so hopefully.

Can customers create their own posters?

Yes! Customers can contact me at dave@hammerfakesandiobreaks.com to get custom posters made for their teams or tournament. Custom posters are $8 each, but $5 if 20 or more are purchased. I am also starting a fundraiser program, where if the posters are for a fundraiser and not for a team order, they are $3.50 each for a purchase of 20 or more.

Last but not least, how much are the posters, and where can we get them?

Posters are $5 each with a permanent special of buy 3, get the 4th free. You can buy them online at http://hammerfakesandiobreaks.com.
